Ethiopia has commenced the free distribution of energy efficient stoves to its citizens as part of efforts by government to promote green economy and sustainable management of forest resources.
The stove distribution is coming on the heels of a recent distribution of five million energy efficient light bulbs in exchange for their old incandescent bulbs.
Alemayehu Tegenu, Ethiopian Water and Energy Minister said that government was promoting energy alternatives such as firewood and coal stoves, solar water heater, solar cooker and household biogas stoves in rural energy development.
The stoves according to the minister would alleviate the stress of rural energy supply in varying degrees.
Tegenu said that the distribution of the energy efficient bulbs had saved the country over 80 megawatt of electric power.
The minister urged all Ethiopians to use energy efficient equipments and cut the amount of money spent on energy as well as save the national power consumption.
