Disappointing results from African HIV study

Attempting to prevent HIV infection via vaginal gels or daily medicine has proven to be ineffective in the southern African region that is devastated by a high number of cases of the disease, because people did not use the medicine as required.

A South African based NGO – International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) – is leading a study to test whether a microbicide vaginal ring which slowly releases the ARV drug dapivirine can prevent HIV infection.
