Nigeria committed to sustainable agriculture

Nigeria’s minister of water resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, has said that the government was committed to the transformation of the nation’s agricultural sector for sustainable development.
Speaking while inspecting the Goronyo Dam Falalia phase II project awarded to Gilmor Nigeria Limited at the cost of N3.8 billion in Sokoto, Ochekpe stated that President Goodluck Jonathan was committed to the development of irrigation farming that will ensure all-year farming activities.
According to Ochekpe, dry season farming sustains the agricultural sector, creates employment and curbs poverty among Nigerians.
She maintained that the federal government was concerned about the maintenance of the dam through the provision of infrastructure that would mitigate against flooding.
Ochekpe said the government was determined to ensure early completion of the Goronyo dam project with a view to realising its food security agenda for the country.
She expressed satisfaction with the progress of work at the project site and assured of government support towards mass production of food in the country even as she stressed that the government was fast tracking policies that would ensure even spread of development across the country.
