Breast, prostate worst cases of cancers – Study

Breast and prostate cancers are the most common among women and men, a study by the Kenya Medical Research Institute shows.
The prevalence rate for breast cancer among women is 33.5 per cent while that of prostrate cancer is 17.3 per cent, the study by the Nairobi Cancer Registry centre of Kemri shows. The two types of cancers have been attributed to increasing cases of the deadly disease, which is currently ranked among highest killers in Kenya.

Cancer specialists yesterday appealed to Kenyans to take routine checkups to detect the presence of the disease early. They said the routine examinations will help stop new infections and further control rising cases of the deadly disease.

The specialists were speaking yesterday at Kenyatta National Hospital during a research symposium that discussed trends and innovations in the management of cancer.

They appealed for the establishment of a National Cancer Registry to collect statistics of people suffering from the disease in order to control it. “The government is interested in the national statistics to show the burden of cancer in the whole country,” Geoffrey Mutuma, a principal research officer at KEMRI, said.
